Theme of the Week
First Touch Mastery 🎯
This week we're focusing on the most important skill in soccer: your first touch. A great first touch puts the ball exactly where you want it — giving you time and space to make your next move. We'll practice controlling the ball with the inside of the foot, the outside, and the sole, in both standing and moving situations.
By the end of this week, every player should feel more confident receiving a pass under pressure and immediately setting themselves up to dribble, pass, or shoot. Let's get those touches sharp!
Featured Drills This Week
Partner Passing Gates
Pass the ball through small cone gates with a partner. Focus on controlling the ball with one touch before passing back. The emphasis this week is on that receiving touch — make it count!
⚽ Coach's Tip
"When the ball comes to you, angle your foot to redirect it — don't just stop it dead. Guide it to where you want it to go next!"
Cone Dribble Slalom
This week's twist: after each run through the cones, a coach or parent rolls a ball to you and you must control it with one touch before dribbling back. First touch under movement — that's the challenge!
⚽ Coach's Tip
"Get your body in line with the ball as it comes to you. The more you face the ball, the easier it is to control!"
3v1 Rondo — First Touch Focus
Classic 3v1 keep-away, but this week each player only gets two touches: one to control, one to pass. This forces every player to make their first touch count — no lazy controls allowed!
⚽ Coach's Tip
"Your first touch should move the ball away from the defender and toward your next pass. Think ahead — where do you want the ball to go before it arrives?"
Parent Prep Note
This week's theme is First Touch Mastery. Here's how you can reinforce it at home:
- Kick or roll a ball gently to your child and ask them to control it with one touch — then pass it back.
- Encourage them to think about where they want the ball to go before it arrives.
- Praise the effort and the intent, not just the result — a good attempt at a first touch is worth celebrating even if it isn't perfect.
- Ask them after practice: "What was your best first touch today?" It helps them reflect and remember the skill.
Even 5–10 minutes of casual passing in the backyard makes a huge difference. Thank you for supporting your player's development!
